| Department of Physiology is one of the first departments to be founded at the inception of Liaquat Medical College, Jamshoro, now a premier medical university, in Pakistan, in 1881. The academic traditions of the department of Physiology have been continually improving during the past 130 years. |

| Department of Physiology Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences envisage to be recognized as a modern academically and technologically advanced department where physiology is taught to undergraduate and postgraduate students utilizing literature depicting recent advances in human physiology; where original research is conducted employing newer and sophisticated machines and equipment. |
Mission |
| The mission of the faculty and staff of the Physiology department Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences are to work hard for the promotion of research to make significant contribution to the body of knowledge and science; to transfer knowledge and skills and impart training that match international standards. |
The Curriculum |
| The curriculum in Physiology is aimed at providing first and second years MBBS and BDS students with a clear overview of Physiology taught at the Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro over these two key professional years. This curriculum is merely a roadmap for the extensive areas of knowledge that the student must master to obtain a broad understanding of the subject. |
Our Goal: |
- By the end of the course, the first professional MBBS and BDS student will be able to understand:
Basic concepts governing functioning of the cell and various organ systems of the human body;
- Various regulatory mechanisms and interrelated feedback mechanisms;
- Different micro and macro cellular processes involved in the transport, synthesis and degradation of substances in the human body;
- Circulatory, respiratory, defense, digestive and excretory functions along with central control coordinating normal operation of these and other systems of the human body;
In addition to that, the pre-clinical student will be able to utilize various routinely used clinical apparatus to make measurements such as blood pressure and electrocardiography and has learned techniques for venous blood collection and determination of blood groups. |
Teaching Methodologies |
| The educational strategies traditionally involved large group lectures and teacher centered approaches. Since we have moved towards a student-centered approach, newer strategies such as small group discussions, tutorials, problem based learning, self-learning and integrated teaching of subjects of the basic sciences have been incorporated to complement lectures and other traditional methods of teaching. Self-directed study will constitute a major strategy to encourage independent thinking and problem solving. Formal teaching consists of didactic lectures, practical demonstrations and tutorials. |
Student Assessment |
| Criterion-referenced tests will be used for the sake of assessment. Assessment of the performance during the entire course will be both formative and summative i.e., utilizing objective structured practical examination (OSPE), single best questions (SBQ) and short essay questions (SEQ). |
Postgraduate Training |
| Department of Physiology is fully equipped with facilities for postgraduate teaching and research. Department owns a state of the art laboratory, a seminar library provided with high speed internet access and a PG room. Highly qualified teaching faculty supervises postgraduate teaching and research. |
