Q: Can I get approval from Ethical review Committee for my study after it is completed?
A: The ERC increasingly receives applications from faculty members for review and approval of their studies, most already sent for publication, well after the completion of the study.
The ERC is not authorized to review research studies, which were conducted in the past without first getting approval from it. The Committee therefore does not accept requests for appraisal of such studies.
As per Terms of Reference, you are required to submit proposal of your study before the study is actually commenced. The Committee cannot and will not review studies, which have not obtained a prior ethical approval. |
Q: How will be my study protocol processed by the ERC?
A: You need to submit your research protocol and ERC form, duly filled, to the Coordinator, ERC who is responsible to assign reviewers, in consultation with the Chair. Your protocol will then be sent to two primary reviewers The reviewers will then present their respective opinions independently and without prior mutual consultation to the ERC members in the meeting of ERC. |
Q: How frequently are ERC meetings held?
A: The ERC meetings are held thrice in a year. However, depending upon the number of protocols submitted, the Chair can convene an extra-ordinary meeting to clear the backlog.

Q: If my study carries no bodily risk to the subjects, do I still need an approval from the ERC?
A: Yes! All research conducted on human subjects, tissues, foetus or genetic material by the faculty members and students of this University or by visiting scholars, require ethical approval by the ERC.
Research studies that carry no potential for physical, psychological, social, economic, or legal harm to the participants are called “zero risk” studies. Protocols of such studies, along with filled forms, are to be submitted to the Coordinator ERC. These Review by Chair/Co-Chair (or person designated) and the Coordinator without it being submitted to reviewers as for other studies. The approval will then be submitted to regular meetings for ratification. |
